What is Commedia dell’Arte?

Commedia dell’Arte is a theatrical form that first appeared in northern Italy in the 16th century. Its characteristic is a vibrant palette of characters and an improvisation-based theatrical performance. Commedia dell’Arte was performed by professional troupes and it became extremely popular not only in Italy, but also in Europe.


The Workshop

This workshop aims to explore the legacy of Commedia dell’Arte in European theatre and specifically in the Italian, French, English and Russian context.

Apart from learning about Commedia dell’Arte and its legacy in European theatre, the participants will have the opportunity to become characters of Commedia dell’Arte onstage.


The workshop is free for everyone and it is funded by the Judith E. Wilson fund, the University of Cambridge Italian Section and CamCREES
